A NEW debt counselling service being offered by Carnmoney Presbyterian Church was officially launched last week at Stormont.
The initiative - a joint venture between the church and award-winning charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) - will provide free debt advice for people across Newtownabbey and North Belfast.
Carnmoney CAP Centre Manager Brian Givans and Rev John Dickinson were among the guests at a special event last Tuesday to mark the opening of four new CAP facilities across Northern Ireland.
The launch, hosted by Naomi Long MLA at Parliament Buildings, saw key referral agencies from across Northern Ireland joining with politicians and partner churches to formally unveil the charity's new bases in Newtownabbey, Carrickfergus, Dungannon and Lurgan.
The Times revealed last month how Carnmoney's new CAP Centre is aiming to play a vital role in helping local people break free from the misery of uncontrollable debt.
Mr Givans will visit people who need debt advice in their own home, take details about their financial situation and pass it on to CAP's financial and legal experts who can then draw up a budget plan for the client, or take them through insolvency procedures.
Speaking at the launch, Naomi Long commented: "We are living in a time of unprecedented economic upheaval and the charity's proven track record of helping people get debt free and then stay debt free is very much needed across the country at this time."
Welcoming the launch of the local CAP centre in Carnmoney, North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds added: "This is a valuable additional service which will bring help and assistance to many people in North Belfast and Newtownabbey."
According to Credit Action, the average household debt in Northern Ireland currently stands at nearly £10,000 (not including mortgages), with total credit card debt across the Province now exceeding £1 billion.
Anyone struggling with debt can arrange an appointment with Brian Givans by contacting CAP on 0800 328 0006 or by logging on to www.capuk.org.
