BLACKSTONE lost their second game of the season 82-65 on the road to the University of Ulster at Jordanstown last Friday night but came away with a creditable first half where they were in contention.
Unlike Strabane on the previous week they had a solid game in so many respects but again faltered in the third quarter being heavily outscored 21-6
The game revolved around the quality of Elks Centre Connor Gallagher who at 6.9 was a handful holding up the ball to open scores on the perimeter for Elk's guards Connor O'Dornan and Andy O'Hare who shared 9 threes in the game.
In the open quarter Blackstone took time to settle into the fast breaking pace and shooting speed of the Super League team. O'Hare and Gary Connelly were off the mark with two three pointers to zero.
Filipowski worked hard on the big centre keeping him off the boards and the Blackstone got their scoring going as Murray and Hillis penetrated to set in the lay up.
Connor Dornan, who played his basketball with the Blackstone as a junior, now playing at Jordanstown hurt the Blackstone with 2 three pointers to set his team into a 7 point lead at the end of the quarter.
With the gap widening to 12 points Filipowski shot well from the top of the key over the big centre and Barry McCormick and Adam Murray hit threes to leave the deficit at 24–17.
In the second phase the Blackstone closed the gap to two and then took the lead. All the Elks' threat came from the perimeter as O Hare shot 5 points and local boy Damien Gallagher, now shooting for the opposition, nailed two threes from the corner.
The Blackstone had managed to seal up the centre with the addition of Gavin Gillan to the defence. The extra power in the key upset the Elks and scores came in the key from Filipowski and Gillan for 8 points going to the basket.
Adam Hillis went to the free throw line for 4 points after drawing the foul and for the first time in the game the Blackstone took the lead as Ryan Hayes shot going through the key to give a 36–40 advantage to the visitors.
The big centre was to hold the key for the home team as he posted his man then turned him to set in at the low post. With Blackstone working frantically to deny that score again he passed the ball off to O'Dornan for a three pointer to kill the half and leave his team ahead by one point at the half time break. The second half saw the Elks game step up a gear and open a 10 point gap. O'Dornan and O'Hare were to shoot three 3 pointers from the perimeter without reply as Blackstone worked hard to seal up the inside game that was always a threat with the presence of the big centre.
Blackstone suffered from a lack of scoring in this phase and their defensive pressure was not effective. They did create opportunities to score but the finishing was not good and this gave the home team the impetus to push into a commanding 67–50 lead at the end of the quarter.
In the closing phase Blackstone regained some of their composure but the gap was not to be closed.
