Victim’s Support Ballymena calls for vigilance this festive season

WITH the festive season upon us, Victim Support NI’s Ballymena branch urges the public to be extra vigilant at this time of year

According to Janet Lynn, the organisation’s Ballymena Branch Coordinator: “It is important that local people remain extra vigilant, especially at this time of year, with Christmas parties, group and individuals out enjoying the seasonal festivities.”

Established in the town 20 years ago, the staff and volunteers at the branch have helped thousands of victims of crime in the local area. Currently there are a number of volunteers based in Ballymena diligently working to help local people in need. Janet and the other staff members also work closely with a number of local agencies and support groups to give local victims of crime the best opportunity and help available.

The charity has even recently received the Safe Place Bronze Charter Status on Domestic Abuse from the Assistant Chief Constable from the Police Service of Northern Ireland Service Delivery Department. At the event hosted by Ballymena based Onus, Victim Support NI Operations Manager, Geraldine Hanna, said: “Victims of domestic abuse can feel secure in the knowledge that Victim Support NI offer a secure setting to discuss their issues and that this type of crime will not be tolerated within the organisation.”

Janet said: “Our branch and the others across Northern Ireland help people affected by any type of crime. We provide emotional support, information and practical help to victims of any crime.”

Janet added: “Victims who have been injured through violent crime may be entitled to apply for criminal injury compensation. This service is free of charge within Victim Support NI and our staff have been specially trained to help. We also have a witness service which can offer support at both crown and magistrates court.”

Encouraging local victims to come forward and report any crime, Janet urged that anyone who might want to avail of the services can call the charity directly. Janet said: “Whether or not you choose to report the crime, Victim Support NI can help you to cope with the effect.”

She added: “When you contact us, a fully trained volunteer will provide tailored information on how we can assist in your individual case, by supporting and guiding you through this difficult process. Victims can meet with volunteers at our Ballymena Office or an agreed location.”
