Yoga for fitness and relaxation

THIS is the time of year that many of us resolve to make changes in our lives for self improvement. One of the best things you can do in this respect is to join an Iyengar yoga class.

This is one of the most popular styles of yoga worldwide and boosts a real feel-good factor.

A new term of ten week classes will begin next week January 14/15 at the Braid Arts Centre, Town Hall, Ballymena.

There will be a Beginners Class on Tuesday evenings from 7.15-8.45pm and an Improvers class on Mondays also at 7.15pm.

Improvers is suitable for students with one year or more experience.

Fee for either class is £50 and advance enrolment is required at The Tourist Office, Town hall (tel. 02825635900).

The classes are suitable for men and women of all ages and abilities. The stretching postures, breathing and relaxation techniques have been practised for over 2000 years; building energy, flexibility, calmness, good health and well-being. Many of the movements are helpful for back and joint problems and there is a strong focus on posture and alignment. Many sports people find yoga stretches helpful in limbering up and to prevent injuries.

Tutor for the course is Margaret Gunn-King yoga teacher Ivan Robinson will also be teaching.

Comfortable clothing should be worn and a mat or blanket is required for the class.

Margaret has also studied and is qualified to teach ‘Yoga for healthy lower backs’ a 12 week course for chronic back pain, the result of a large research study into yoga, funded by Arthritis Research UK and senior yoga teachers with very positive results.

She will be starting this course in Broughshane later in January. Anyone interested can contact her on 25961202 for an application form. More information on the course can be found at www.yogaforbacks.co.uk

Margaret was recently awarded an All Ireland Life Award after being nominated by a yoga student. This was a competition organised by BT/IrishTimes/Vodaphone and which was a lovely surprise.
