AARON Swan, from Clough, is looking forward to next Friday night's Ballymena Road Club–Scott Roof Tiles annual prize presentation and dinner dance.
The Cambridge House pupil will join his club mates to celebrate an incredible year which saw him win, amongst a host of other awards, three All Ireland titles.
This made him the first Ballymena youth rider to achieve this. In fact he is only the third Ballymena rider, from any age group, to be crowned an all Ireland Road Race Champion. The others being Gordon Caldwell in the early sixties and Billy Kerr in 1982. Aaron's success came in the Irish Title race events, at Gorey in Co. Wexford, in July, where he was runner up in the Under 12 All Ireland Time Trial Championship.
However later that same day he won the U12 Criterium Championship in convincing style coming from behind, then breaking away, with one lap to go along with last years champion Michael O'Loughlin (Carrick-on-Suir). Aaron won the sprint to the line by a few metres to win his first title and gold medal.
The following day the road race was held in perfect conditions, again Aaron and O'Loughlin did most of the attacking throughout the race. After a massive effort from Aaron on the last climb he broke away for a comfortable victory giving him the Under 12 Road Race title and another gold medal.
The two wins and the second place in the time trial earned him the much coveted all Ireland U12 Champion of Champions title.
In addition to this at the end of the season he became U12 Ulster Time Trial Champion, winning by over 20 seconds on the 4 mile course at Craigavon.
The main open national races for youth in Ireland, apart from the All Ireland Championships, are the three stage races, Ras na nog, The Cork 3 Man and The International Youth Tour of Mayo.
Aaron was the overall winner of the Ras taking first place in all three stages. He finished third overall in the Cork 3 Man, achieving a first place in the time trial stage.
Following this he was selected to ride for the Ulster three man team at the Mayo International Youth Tour. Here he finished second in the time trial and took seventh overall and helped the Ulster team to a well earned first place.
Over the year Aaron competed in 33 open races throughout Ireland. He finished first seventeen times and had six second places and two third places.
As well as this he competed in all 24 Ballymena Road Club youth section races, finishing a close runner up in the Road Race handicap league.
When asked about his years accomplishments Aaron said that he had trained hard all last winter always having the All Ireland championships in his focus. He aimed to peak at the right time and it worked out perfectly. Regrettably he couldn't hold his top form through to The Tour of Mayo.
