BALLYMENA Road Club–Scott Roof Tiles cyclists held their annual prize presentation dinner and dance in the Adair Arms hotel last Friday evening.
One hundred and six club members, officials, their families and special guests were present to witness the distribution of the club's vast array of silverware.

Club President Alan Mark welcomed the guests, who included guest of honour John Blair of JBE Building services.

The club's main sponsors, Northstone NI, were represented by regional sales manager Ken Anderson. Other sponsors in attendance included John Walker of the country garage, Alex McAuley and Andy Lynn of A Bonar and company and Mrs. Mollie Wilson. The club's vice presidents, Gordon Caldwell and John Maxwell were also guests.

The local media was represented by Stephen Alexander and Shaun O'Neill, sports editors of the Times and Guardian respectively.

George and Joan Graham of Graham's kitchens Woodgreen, the location of Ireland's fastest time trial course, were also in attendance.

Former NICF president Morris Foster also attended and he shared some of his memories from yesteryear with Alan Mark.

One of the club's early members, Fred Wylie and his wife were also present and they too enjoyed the occasion.

The senior prize presentation was conducted by club chairman Andrew Wills, who thanked club secretary Hazel Hughes for organising the function. He also reminded this year's trophy winners that Hazel had spent many hours cleaning all the silverware and told them he would like it handed back in the same pristine condition next year.

Andrew was assisted by William McKendry and Adrian Kerr who looked after the awards for the youth section. The youths were out in big numbers and their attendance certainly livened up proceedings.

Race secretary Tommy Wilson spoke on behalf of the prizewinners and thanked all those who had assisted with the promotion of races during the season: race sponsors, marshalls, timekeepers, judges, first aiders, signing on officials, car drivers etc. Tommy also thanked the PSNI for their continued assistance at the club's two big open races.

Stephen Alexander also took the mike and thanked the road club's press officer Richard Wilson for his weekly cycling reports. His comments were very much appreciated by Richard.

Guest of Honour John Blair handed over the prizes, after which he spoke with affection of his time as a cyclist with the club. He said he missed the cycling but most of all missed the fellowship of his cycling colleagues. John thanked the club for inviting him as guest of honour.

The only trophy which isn't awarded for competition is the "friendship cup" which goes to non competitive achievement or services to the club.

This year's winner is Carol Mark who is a member of the club's ladies' committee.

Carol has assisted at open races for over 30 years and has been signing on steward at the club's Wallace Caldwell and Red hand trophy road races and also at the tour of the north. She also helps with the post event tea. Carol's award acknowledges a lifetime of dedication to the club.
