THIS Saturday, April 28, sees top kart racing action at Nutts Corner Motorsports Centre at the third round of the tough Ulster Karting Club's Ulster Cup Series.
Significantly though the meeting is only a week away from round two of the All Ireland Golden Helmet series at Kilkenny on May 5-6 so drivers in that series will be balancing the need to all out to get up to full race tune without jeopardising their machinery for the sake of Ulster Cup points.
Locals continue to be in very strong form in the sport as shown recently when the club and its management partner Motorsport 33 put on the first major meeting of the year on Easter Monday and Tuesday, the Ulster Championships.
In the Junior Rotax Max class, Broughshane’s Steven Bradley was right in the thick of the podium battle from the off and an opening win showed his potential.
The remainder of the races saw Bradley take a mix of seconds and thirds and in the end Steven settled for the well deserved second overall. No doubt young Bradley will be a top runner in the Ulster Cup.
The Pro-karts continue to have tremendous entries and Ballymena’s Mark Dunlop was also in the thick of the podium chase at Easter.
After a slower than hoped for start the second day really saw Dunlop pull out the stops with two thirds and a fourth to his credit. In the end Dunlop took a well deserved fourth and no doubt he will be a top five contender on Saturday.
The pinnacle of the sport in the province is 125 Rotax Max and Saturdays meeting is sure to see plenty of rapid action if the Ulster championships is anything to go by.
Ballymena’s Brian McCarte and Blair’s team mate Ryan Donnelly had an equally tough close battle in the top ten.
McCarte at one stage looked like a top five contender after taking a mid meeting win with a third by Donnelly showing his potentially. In the end both had a mix of top tens overall and settled for seventh and eighth, only thee points apart and only a handful of points away from the top five.
Looking a few weeks ahead, those that don’t head for Kilkenny will take on round two of the Northern Ireland championships on Saturday, May 12, at Kirkistown.
Racing this Saturday starts at 10am with two heats per class and finals start just after lunch.
