Creative kids urged to kick off new year with second annual Make Art Not Waste Competition

LOCAL schoolchildren are being urged to get creative with the rubbish and waste left over from the festive season with an invitation to compete in the second-ever RiverRidge Recycling Make Art Not Waste School’s competition.

Following the success of last year’s competition, which saw seven talented students from the Ballymena, Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady, Londonderry, Magherafelt and Moyle council districts win an amazing trip to the world-renowned Eden Project Cornwall, pupils are once again being encouraged to take part in this innovative competition.

Children in years 8, 9 and 10 will put their creative talents to the test to create an inspiring piece of artwork that reflects that waste can be a resource and reinforce the ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ message in the most creative way possible.

Last year, Hannah Neely from Magherafelt was chosen as the winner and won a trip to the Eden Project in Cornwall as well as a cheque for £500 for her school – St Mary’s Grammar with the overall winner receiving an iPad.

Brett Ross, Managing Director of RiverRidge Recycling, said: “We were overwhelmed by the standard of entries from the schoolchildren last year and cannot wait to see how they interpret the ‘waste is a resource’ theme this year.

“There are so many different ways we can reduce the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill not least in a creative way such as art, and with prizes on offer including £500 for each council winner’s school as well as an iPad for the winning student we hope to see lots of entries this year.

“All schools in the seven council areas should have received all the competition information recently, so kids get your thinking caps on and get to work!”

The competition is supported by the Department of the Environment’s Rethink Waste NI programme and its media partner is Sustainable Ireland.

Entry forms and terms and conditions can be found at www.riverridgerecycling.com and must be submitted by March 22 2013.
