Kennel Club launches Get Fit with Fido challenge
HEALTH and fitness expert, Rosemary Conley CBE has teamed up with the Kennel Club once again to launch a competition that encourages dog owners to enlist their canine companions to help battle the bulge.
The Kennel Club’s Get Fit With Fido Challenge launches today and runs until July 15.
The challenge rewards the dog and dog owner who jointly lose the most weight, and the dog owner and dog who individually lose the most weight, with the help of exercising together.
Rosemary said: “Statistics from the NHS show that over 60 percent of adults in the UK are overweight or obese, highlighting the need for action. People are not getting the exercise that they need but a small change can make a huge difference.
“Dogs can be great fitness partners for those trying to lose weight and by simply increasing the length of walks, owners and dogs can improve their health and fitness together.”
It’s not just dog owners - one in four dogs are overweight as a result of their owners’ inactive lifestyles and research has revealed that one in five dogs don’t get their required daily walk.
Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary, said: “As the statistics show, the growing obesity epidemic needs to be tackled, and both dogs and owners need to improve their fitness.
“Get Fit With Fido was set up to inspire dog owners to find new and different ways to get fit with their dog. Walking your dog or taking up dog sports like agility can really help improve fitness and is a lot more fun than going to the gym.”
Last year’s winner, Lara Robbins lost an incredible six stone by walking her dogs and taking part in agility.
Lara commented: “I entered the Kennel Club’s Get Fit With Fido competition as an incentive to help me lose weight and push me towards my goal. Since losing the weight I haven’t had any of the back or ankle problems I had previously been suffering with, and my health has improved dramatically.
“Before losing the weight, I had tried every type of diet with no result. I never did agility competitively before because I couldn’t run fast enough to keep up with my dogs. But once I decided that I needed to lose weight I ramped up my agility training and the weight started to just fall off. Having the dogs has changed my life.”
Rosemary added: “As proven by Lara, this method of exercise can result in fantastic results and the health benefits can be wonderful for both dog and owner.”
