In an interview with the Times Ian McCaig said he and his wife Maybel who both suffer from respiratory conditions were lucky to escape their smoke filled home in Alexandra park on Wednesday night.
A police spokesman appealed for information into the attack: "At about 1.30am, neighbours alerted a couple living at Alexander Park in the Dunclug area to the fact that a garage attached to their home was on fire.
"They assisted the couple out. The fire service attended and brought the blaze under control. The garage was used by a family member to store tools for his joinery business. The garage and contents were destroyed and there was smoke damage to the house.
"The number to call with any information is 0845 600 8000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
