Historian writes about Atlantic heroes of Second World War
THE role of two East Antrim men in World War II has been recalled in a new book.
‘Antrim and Beyond, Part Two - They Served in Time of War’ has been published by author Bobby Cameron (pictured right).
The book contains personal accounts of the men’s wartime experiences.
Islandmagee man Robert Boyd, a successful submarine commander, was later to become Captain Robert Boyd RN, DSO, DSC.
Chief Engineer Officer John Kerr, originally from Islandmagee, but lately of Whitehead, served aboard the SS Bengore Head which was torpedoed in the North Atlantic in 1941.
The U-Boat responsible, the U-110, was depth-charged to the surface, boarded, and significantly, the current German Signalling (Enigma) ciphers and codes were recovered.
Mr. Cameron told the Carrick Times that someone else who made an “authentic and substantial contribution to the history of this event” is Georg Hogel, a resident of Munich, who was the radio operator of the U-110 which sank the Bengore Head.
The author went on to say that an article on the headline losses in the North Atlantic is accompanied by rare photographs of the main diesel engine room, the main electrical control room, the rudder, propellers and keel as well as one showing the place of the fatal depth charge impact.
Mr. Cameron indicated that the story of three others who did not survive the conflicts has been poignantly recalled by their relatives.
The 230-page book contains 200 photographs, maps and sketches.
