The former Ballymena Borough Council was among 17 public bodies given the chance to acquire Northern Ireland’s only nuclear bunker back in August, 2013, it has emerged.

The revelation that the legacy local authority missed out on owning the Ballymena based Cold War nuclear bunker, which is now on the market for £575k, emerged in a response to a written question on the property from local MLA Robin Swann to its current owners, the Office of the First and Deputy First Ministers.

He asked why public bodies, such as Mid and East Antrim Council, were not offered the opportunity to purchase the bunker prior to it being put on the open market recently.

The response stated that such an opportunity had been given back in August 2013 when “17 public bodies were notified” but “No expressions of interest were received.”
