Shortly after the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympics at Sochi drew to a close, the Cub Scouts of 5th Antrim Scout Group had the opportunity to celebrate an Olympic Gold medal won by a local sports star 50 years ago.
Robin Dixon, Lord Glentoran, and his sporting partner Tony Nash won a Gold medal for the two-man bobsleigh event at Innsbruck in 1964.
The two-man team later won a gold and two bronzes in the World Championships. During a recent pack meeting at All Saints Parish Centre, the cubs had an opportunity to examine the Olympic Gold medal and to hear Robin tell them the famous story about the generous sportsmanship of one of his 1964 Italian Olympic rivals, who gave the UK team a spare part for their sled.
Perhaps as a result, the GB team won Gold, while the Italians had to make do with Silver.
Robin answered plenty of questions from the children and at the end of the evening, of course, they all wanted his autograph!
