A team of local health workers are among those taking up the fundraising baton as they join Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Lifein Ballymena.
The group from Antrim Area Hospital, have teamed up as the ‘Happy Feet’ team and will be taking part in the overnight event at Ballymena Rugby Club on June 14-15. Now they are urging local people to follow their lead.
People from all walks of life, ages and different levels of fitness are welcome.
Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life sees participants raise as much money as possible in the months leading up to the overnight celebration, through a wide range of activities from karaoke competitions to quizzes, supermarket bag-packs to charity balls, and securing donations from friends, families and work colleagues.
During Relay For Life, team members take it in turns to walk round a track while everyone else enjoys the carnival atmosphere.
As the Relay continues non-stop through the night, team members not on the track take turns to rest, eat, or sleep in their tents, which are set up close by.
The wide range of fun activities are open to the whole community and everyone is welcome to join in on the day and help raise further funds for Cancer Research UK.
As dusk falls, the atmosphere quietens as the Candle of Hope ceremony begins. The event is the most poignant part of Relay For Life when specially made Candle of Hope bags - decorated with touching messages in memory or in celebration of loved ones - are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the rugby pitch.
Lisa Kirkwood, volunteer Chair of Cancer Research UK’s Relay For Life in Ballymena, said: “We would love to hear from anyone who wants to find out more about Relay For Life and how they can get involved. Don’t worry if you haven’t fundraised before. This is a unique event and every single person in Ballymena can play a part. Every step Cancer Research UK makes towards beating cancer relies on every pound, every hour and every person.
