The environmental speaking competition, which has been running for over 15 years, offers local children from both primary and secondary school levels the opportunity to stand up and air their views on environmental issues such as reducing waste at a local and global level.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Thomas Hogg, was there on the day to announce the winners of the competition.

He said: “The standard of presentations in the Antrim and Newtownabbey heat was exceptionally high and judges had an extremely difficult task in selecting a winner from both the junior and senior categories to go forward and represent the Borough in the Northern Ireland Finals next month.

“I would like to wish our junior winner, Katy Gunning from Templepatrick Primary School and our senior winner, Alexandra Stafford from Belfast High School the best of luck in the grand final, and also congratulate all the local contenders for their superb entries.”

The Environmental Youth Speak finals will be held in Theatre at the Mill, Mossley Mill on Tuesday, March 8.
