James, 54, said: “I run in memory of my nephew Christopher who tragically died due to meningitis.

“It is important to raise as much money as possible so MRF can raise awareness and fund research into this terrible disease.

“The support I have received from family, friends and the local community and businesses has been overwhelming. I’d would like to thank everyone who has supported the fundraising efforts.”

James sister, Anna McKee and family are also hosting the Annual MRF Ball, aptly named ‘Christopher’s Ball’ at Galgorm Manor Resort and Spa on 4th March 2017.

MRF Fundraising Officer, Ashley Whittley said: “On behalf of everyone at MRF, I’d like to thank James, his family and all those who supported his fundraising so very much. James and family are truly amazing in the their dedication to MRF and raise vital funds year in, year out. A fantastic amount has been raised and this donation will make a real impact on our work; funding cutting-edge research, raising awareness of the symptoms of the disease and supporting all those affected through services such as our helpline, befriending and home visits.”

“Anyone, at any age can contract meningitis but babies, young children and teenagers are most at risk. MRF estimate around 3,400 people get bacterial meningitis and septicaemia in the UK and Ireland each year. Around one in ten people who contract the disease will die and a third of surviviors will suffer life altering effects such as brain damage, loss of limbs and hearing loss. MRF relies on the generosity of the public and local businesses to continue it’s vital work across the province.”
