Mayor Wales helps spruce up Doury Road

Mid & East Antrim's Mayor Audrey Wales has been helping to keep the borough tidy by getting involved in a local '˜Spring Clean' event.

Councillor Wales recently joined members of the Doury Road Development Group, young volunteers from High Kirk Church and officers from the Council’s Environmental Health Department to play her part in a UK-wide initiative ‘Spring Clean’, an annual event that is carried out within most of the housing estates in the borough.

Speaking afterwards, Mayor Wales said: “I was pleased to assist in raising the profile of ‘Spring Clean’ by underlining its twin aims of both encouraging and also assisting local residents to remove litter and rubbish within their own area.

“This is particularly important as this event is run in conjunction with the ongoing Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful Campaign,” she said.

The ‘Big Spring Clean’ is Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’s flagship volunteering opportunity delivered through Live Here Love Here.

The programme supports local community clean-ups across all 11 council areas in Northern Ireland. It is Northern Ireland’s fastest growing community clean-up volunteering campaign and is open to individuals, schools, community groups and businesses from all communities wishing to rid their streets of litter and discarded rubbish.

Big Spring Clean continues to be a growing campaign, in 2015 it mobilised over 89,506 volunteers to get involved in clean up events across Northern Ireland. Together they removed an amazing 107 tonnes of litter (that’s equivalent to six double decker buses!) from our streets, coastal and rural areas.

The Spring Clean provides a range of opportunities for volunteers including one-off events which require only a few hours of time and all sections of society can get involved.

The Live Here Love Here website provides an online network where volunteers can register their clean up events, get useful advice and information and find out about other events in their area.
