Soapbox derby race day details

With the countdown to race day well and truly under way, the organisers of Ballymena's first ever Soapbox Derby have been finalising their plans.

Teams from all over the borough and beyond are expected to take part in the event which will take place on a course at Woodside Road on Saturday, June 4.

Entry forms should be received by Friday (May 27).

Soapbox vehicle safety inspection/scrutineering will be held from 10am to 12.30pm on race day in the GAA club car park.

Soapbox racing vehicles will remain on display in the carpark until race time.

Competitor registration, entry form checking and signing of waiver forms will be from 10am to 12.30pm on race day.

Spectator parking will be in the GAA car park. Please follow directions of marshals on the day. Overflow parking will be in Woodside Road industrial estate.

Woodside Road will be closed from 1.30pm - 4.30pm. After that it will take some time to completely clear the road so please take alternative routes.

There are several spectator viewing points along the course, please follow marshals directions and avoid the marked prohibited areas.

A spokesman said: “This will be an event for all the family to come out and support and cheer on your favourite team.North Ballymena Community Cluster is a cross community organisation and the event will profile how communities from different areas can engage in a bit of fun.

“Each soapbox will be timed as they make the descent from the top of the Woodside Road until near the finish line down beside the car park of the G.A.A club.”
