So successful has Glenravel Oil Club been in the short time since its establishment that it has even been recognised at Stormont.
The community bulk buying scheme, which was started two years ago by Glenravel District Community Residents’ Association in partnership with Ballymena Borough Council, is helping address the growing issue of fuel poverty.
Quickly going from strength to strength and with around 170 households now signed up as members, the Club has been hailed as a front-runner in community enterprise resulting in real economic benefits for local people.
Each month the Club places around 60 orders for oil on behalf of their members, saving around £100 for each household in a three month period, effectively putting real money back into the pockets of its members.
The Oil Club’s champion Marian Maguire and her team of volunteers are inviting organisations and groups to ‘Come and Hear Our Story’ on Monday, March 31, in Glenravel Sports and Community Complex, Martinstown, starting at 9.30am and finishing with a light lunch.
The cost is £20 per group of up to three people and those who attend will hear how an oil club operates and how it can benefit the community. Contact Valerie on 2586 2777 to register.
