A Ballymena scrap metal dealer has been made the subject of a £500,000 Confiscation Order, under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, for waste offences at Belfast Crown Court.

At a previous court hearing in November 2013, Robert John Mulholland of Mulholland Scrap Metals Ltd, Maine Road, Shanksbridge, Ballymena admitted keeping, depositing and treating controlled waste without a licence.

Mr Mulholland, the director and sole shareholder in the business, was previously sentenced to three months in jail, suspended for two years, for three offences under the Waste and Contaminated Land (NI) Order 1997.

During visits to the company’s site in 2010 and 2011, officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency found between 50% and 80% of the company’s land covered in scrap metal, including cars and car parts. The officers also found fridges, bed springs, batteries and cans.

Between June 2010 and June 2011, just under 20,000 tonnes of waste was estimated to have been treated on the site with a minimum turnover estimated at c. £3million.
