Crash motorist had been drinking vodka

A driver who was over the limit after colliding with a vehicle near Cullybackey at 10.30am on a Saturday has been banned from getting behind the wheel for 16 months.

He was also fined £350 for the offence.

Grazna Stanuch (42), of Millfield, Ballymena, appeared at the town’s Magistrates Court and admitted charges of driving with excess alcohol as well as failing to stop, remain and report a damage only accident at Granagh Road on January 14 this year.

A prosecutor said the defendant collided with another vehicle.

She had subsequently left the area but when spoken to afterwards by police she had an alcohol/breath reading of 50 - which is 15 over the legal limit.

The defendant admitted to police she had been driving earlier.

During interview she acknowledged she had been drinking vodka the night before.

However, she did not know what time she had stopped drinking.

A defence lawyer said it was a frosty morning and Stanuch had skidded and got out at the scene.

He said that she thought that when she had established another woman was uninjured she had fulfilled her responsibilities and left.

The lawyer said his client, who is Polish, “doesn’t speak a word of English” and the language barrier was a big factor in the case.
