Snorted cocaine in police cell

A Ballymena man was observed sniffing white powder at 4am whilst in custody in a police cell and it turned out to be cocaine.

Anthony Dowds (20), of Millfield, had the offence detected on January 14 this year and at the town’s Magistrates Court on Thursday he pleaded guilty to possessing Class A drugs.

He also admitted damaging two parking meters belonging to Mid & East Antrim Borough Council and stealing £320 in cash two days before Christmas last year.

A prosecutor said the defendant was identified by CCTV.

The case has been adjourned until April for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.

A co-accused, Daly Kline Mooney (24), of Warden Square, Ballymena, is also charged with damaging two parking meters and stealing cash on December 23.

On the same date he is accused of possessing cannabis.

Mooney is further accused of criminal damage to a parking meter three days later.

Also on Boxing Day he is accused of disorderly behaviour at Pat’s Brae, Ballymena.

He appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link from Maghaberry Jail.

Mooney’s defence solicitor, Nigel McIlrath, asked for the case to be adjourned to March 23 to get his client’s attitude to the charges.
