Former Ballymena Mayor Audrey Wales will be flying out to Milwaukee in August to showcase The Gobbins as part of a tourism drive for the East Antrim coastal attraction.

Cllr Wales is one of five elected members selected along with one member of Mid & East Antrim Council’s staff to take part in the promotional visit to the U.S. which will see them attend the Milwaukee Irish Festival between August 13-16.

Working on the tourism promotion initiative for The Gobbins attraction, which is due to open in July, will be Cllr Audrey Wales, Cllr Jim Brown, Cllr Mark McKintym Ald Greg McKeen, and Ald Maureen Morrow, accompanied by Tourism Officer, Ainsley McWilliams.

Cllr Wales said: “Milwaukee Irish Fest is the largest celebration of Irish culture and heritage in the United States and a great opportunity to showcase The Gobbins.

“The show attracts approximately 150,000 attendees and is located only two hours from one of our key tourism markets - in Chicago.

“The festival focus is on Irish heritage and culture with a whole section devoted to travel to Ireland, so this is a very important promotion.

“Members are keen to generate consumer databases and enquiries and will be working towards the provision of opportunities to promote the attraction to major tour operators and key tourism professionals,” she added.

The Milwaukee Irish Fest is recognised by Tourism Ireland as a major marketing opportunity to target US consumers with an interest in travelling to Ireland.
