Funds are to be sought from the NI Tourist Board to map out all Council graveyards in the borough.
The decision to apply to NITB’s Tourism Innovation Fund, which could provide up to half of the £40,000 cost, was taken at the July monthly meeting by councillors who heard that the mapping exercise would increase the genealogical and tourism potential of the sites.
Members were told that there are currently limited digitised records for Council cemeteries and that mapping would change that situation, improving accessibility for genealogical searches.
Members agreed to submit a funding application for the work which, it was pointed out, would also complement the Museum’s Churchyard Trail currently being developed.
Cllr PJ McAvoy said: “People involved in genealogy are coming from overseas and if Council had something like this on record it would be very good.”
“This is an area in which we could advance tourism,” added Cllr Maurice Mills.
