Glenravel Councillor, Paul Maguire, has expressed his delight that, after 7 years of lobbying and campaigning for the redevelopment of Cargan Soccer Pitch and Play Area, contractors have cut the grass on the newly drained and sown surface, for the first time in over 15 years.

Cllr. Maguire explained: “On a 2007 canvass, I was asked if council would redevelop the Cargan pitch and play area, which had lain derelict for almost 10 years. Council explained that, as no interest had been expressed in the amenity for such a long time, there was no case for any such development or investment.

“I immediately set about building a case and proving need and demand. I eventually persuaded council to drain and re-sow Cargan soccer pitch and to provide outdoor gym equipment, a teenage shelter, entrance feature and perimeter footpath, with support from DARD Village Renewal Programme, “Improving Quality of Life” Measure. The project had the entire support of all members and officers, for which I am very grateful.

“When I visited the pitch after the grass had been cut, I felt quite emotional, as I hadn’t ever seen it in its heyday. We have a recently established and very ambitious club now in Glenravel FC, currently riding high in the Ballymena Mortgages BSML Division Three, who I trust will soon find their home in one of the most picturesque locations in Ballymena.

=“Once complete, the total spend in the current phase will exceed £60k. I have secured a further £250k in the capital programme for 2015/2016 to expand the service provision so as to enhance and maximise the usage of the pitch and ancillary amenities.

“Council’s Building Control department have had draft plans drawn up for the area to include changing rooms and the pitch is likely to be ready for playing on at around September/October time this year. Changing will be facilitated using temporary changing accommodation until more permanent changing is completed.”
