Ballymena Sinn Féin Councillor Monica Digney has announced that she will not be seeking to stand in next year’s Local Government Elections.

Cllr Digney made history in 2005 becoming the first Sinn Féin candidate to be elected to Ballymena Council. She was re elected to represent the rate payers of the Bannside district electoral area again in 2011. Prior to this Cllr. Digney represented Sinn Féin on Moyle District Council for Four years.

Cllr. Digney said: “Serving the people of Ballymena and in particular the citizens of Bannside, over the past 8 years has been a privilege. I have found this role both challenging and rewarding and I have always tried to serve the interests of all the ratepayers to the best of my ability. I will be continuing on In Ballymena Council until 2015 but have decided not to stand as a candidate in next year’s elections.”

North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA Daithi Mc Kay said: “Despite being a lone voice when first elected to Ballymena Council, Monica courageously stood up for those within the Borough who previously had no voice. She has continued to do that throughout her terms on the Council and deserves much credit.”
