July 1, 1916 was the bloodiest day in British military history with almost 20,000 dead and 40,000 wounded in the course of only a few hours .

It was by any standards a day of unequivicol horror which affected towns and villages the length and breadth of Britain.

Ballymena and District suffered severely and the memory of those who fell was honoured last Tuesday evening with a Royal British Legion service in the town’s Memorial Park.
