A new play which tells the story of the Ulster Covenant attracted a large audience to The Braid Museum & Arts Centre last week.

‘1912: A hunded years on’ told the story of a vital year in local history when plans for Irish devolution met with hostility from Ulster Unionists who signed a Solemn League and Covenant to proclaim their opposition.

The fast-paced and lively play was thought-provoking and featured two talented and versatile young actors Gerard Jordan and Ciaran Nolan, who brought to life famous characters from the era such as Edward Carson and James Connolly, as well as portraying the tensions and dilemmas that ordinary people faced during this time.

The play was carefully researched by Philip Orr, local historian, who co-authored the script with Alan McGuckian, and both felt the script offered a fair and honest account of a year whose political legacy is with us still, a hundred years on.

After the performance many from the large mixed community audience who had attended, agreed that this dramatization was not only skillful and thought provoking, but also presented a script that was fair and well balanced representing people’s thoughts from all sides of the community during this political period.

The play was brought to the Braid by the Messines Group Ballymena, a cross community group of representatives from throughout the borough who have worked together since participating in a Peace III Messines Programme in 2010.

This Ballymena performance received financial support from OFMDFM and Ballymena Borough Council’s Good Relations Unit.

In addition, the project was supported by: Contemporary Christianity Biblical Faith for a Changing World; Community Relations Council; Lyric Theatre; Mid Antrim Museum Service; International Fund for Ireland and the Carson Project.
