Local successes commended by Mayor McAvoy

BALLYMENA Mayor, Alderman P.J. McAvoy has extended congratulations to various individuals and groups in the borough on the achievements they have made during the past month.

At the outset of last Monday night’s monthly meeting of council in The Braid, Alderman McAvoy pointed out that he fulfilled numerous Mayoral engagements in September and he paid tribute to a variety of local successes which included...

Broughshane and Ahoghill on winning the Large Village and Small Town categories, respectively, in the 34th ‘Translink Ulster in Bloom Competition’. The Mayor, who was in attendance at the announcement ceremony in Belfast, pointed out that Broughshane beat off stiff competition from the other shortlisted towns of Hillsborough and Donaghcloney and Ahoghill secured first place over Portrush and Richhill. “Congratulations to Broughshane and Ahoghill and to all those involved, whose hard work and endeavors in maintaining their community, ensure continued success,” said the Mayor who said he will be hosting a reception for the Committees of Broughshane and Ahoghill to mark their achievements.
The Mayor also reflected on the visit of the Duke of York, Prince Andrew, to the Farm Lodge campus of NRC and to the Michelin plant in support of apprenticeship programmes.

He recalledt, too, the Diamond Jubilee celebrations which continued last month, in particular the honour of the town being chosen by the Royal British Legion as the location for their All Ireland Thanksgiving Parade and Church Service. He added: “I wish to take this opportunity to thank all the Council staff involved in assisting the Royal British Legion in organising this event. It was yet another job very well done.”
