McIlveen gets fired up over Fuel Poverty

LOCAL Assemblyman David McIlveen is urging “all relevant stakeholders” to continue the fight against fuel poverty.

The MLA pointed out that he had, in a bid to further help his constituents, recently obtained Keep Warm Packs from Ballymena Borough Council, and was surprised by demand for them which exhausted the supply within a matter of days.

He said the stark reality of how many people living in and around Ballymena are struggling to keep warm has deeply concerned him and underlined the “need to act now”.

He said: Astoundingly, our entire supply was exhausted within days and we have dozens of names on a waiting list for more packs.

2Whilst I have always been keenly aware of the fuel poverty problem, even I was surprised by the level of demand in Ballymena. I cannot help but be concerned that my constituents are suffering in this way and we must continue to work hard to reverse this trend. As fuel gets more and more expensive, the numbers of people facing this problem will only increase.

“The DUP members and ministers have been extremely proactive in the fight against fuel poverty. Nelson McCausland, Social Development Minister has been rolling out double glazing schemes, boiler replacement schemes, insulation schemes and set up a Winter Fuel Payment helpline. Edwin Poots, the Health Minister funds the Public Health Agency who developed the Keep Warm Packs.

“Unfortunately, this great work is fighting against the unstoppable tide of fuel duty and energy company profits,” said Mr McIlveen.

“I will continue to support the measures currently being taken to reduce the effects of fuel poverty, but appeal to those with the power to make a difference to act now.
