MLA urges locals to ‘stay safe’ this Christmas

NORTH Antrim MLA David McIlveen has urged locals to stay safe this Christmas period.

As a member of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Mr McIlveen warns residents to take care on the roads and protect their homes.

He ssaid: “With very wet weather and bad driving conditions forecast for the festive period, it is essential motorists drive cautiously and don’t speed. I also cannot emphasise enough the importance of not driving after drinking alcohol. Just one drink impairs your judgement and could be life threatening.

“Plan how you are getting home, don’t accept a lift from someone who has been drinking and never drive after having alcohol. Christmas should be a happy time spent with family and friends but each year many families feel the loss of someone they love killed on our roads.”

Mr McIlveen also highlighted increased crime in the North Antrim area: “It is important that everyone is aware of the higher number of burglaries over Christmas. In Northern Ireland four out of every 10 burglars enter the property through an unlocked door or window so although it sounds simple, do double check your doors and windows are locked.

“Also make sure you lock your car and keep valuables out of sight and be aware of pick pockets when doing your last minute Christmas shopping. Remember to be vigilant and always contact the police if you notice any suspicious activity in your area. These simple steps can ensure that everyone has a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.”
