Mum and child escape injury in car park attack

A Ballymena mum and her infant daughter narrowly escaped injury in the town centre on Friday when a stone was thrown on to the windscreen of their car from the roof of a car park.

Speaking to The Ballymena Times shortly after the incident, which occurred at around 1pm in the Springwell Street multi-storey car park, the woman, who did not want to be identified, said it was “very lucky” that no one was hurt.

The 29-year-old, who was travelling in her car with her sister and four-and-a-half month-old baby daughter, said she had just driven into the car park and was about to drive into the covered parking area at ground level when her vehicle was damaged.

“I was just driving round the wee corner to find a space when something hit the windscreen and smashed it. It all happened so fast,” she said.

“We were all very shocked and the baby was crying so I drove round to the pay station and reported it and then the police were called.”

The woman said she believed that the stone had been hurled from a height, possibly the roof of the car park. A police spokesperson confirmed that a Blue VW Bora had been damaged by a stone thrown from the roof of a car park in the town at around 1pm on Friday and issued an appeal for witnesses, urging them to contact Ballymena PSNI with any information.

The woman added: “I can’t believe this has happened but I have to think about how lucky we are that no-one was hurt. I just wanted to speak out to warn other people and let them know what happened. I have heard of this sort of thing happening in Belfast but I never thought it would happen in Ballymena,” she said.
