NRC nail art show as sweet as candy

FANTASY, imagination and creativity were the theme for this year’s nail art competition hosted by NRC’s Beauty Therapy students at Ballymena.

The event, which was organised by NRC Lecturers Leanne Clydesdale and Sharon Eatwell and the Beauty Department in the College, brought the Level 3 & Level 2 Beauty Therapy students together to create a show full of glamour and fun, entitled ‘Candy Couture’.

Nail art is a creative practice of painting decorative designs on fingernails and is a fun way to accessorize a special occasion outfit, and is increasingly becoming more popular in the fashion industry today.

Sharon Eatwell, NRC Lecturer for Level 3 Advanced Nail Technology, said: “This event is a fun and creative way to capture the imagination of the students and to let them work on a live project so that they fully understand what is required by industry.

On the catwalk this year were Level 2 Beauty Therapy students who modelled fantasy creations including ‘Tropical Chic’, ‘Candy Freak’, Miss Comic Book Cutie’, ‘Little Sweet Heart’, ‘Pink Cutie’, ‘Nicki Nicki’, ‘Chandy Chic’, Suger & Spice’, ‘Sweetie Pie’, Circus Girl, ‘Skittles’, ‘Alice in Candy Land’, ‘Fairy Nymph’, ‘Sugar Skulls’ and ‘Little Tinkerbell’.

Judging the competition were Charlene Balmer from New York Nails and Anna Phuong Dang from Professional Nail Care.

The students were judged on the character they created and on the nail art they designed to complement their creation.

Winner of the competition was Marie McErlain with Tinkerbella and model Emma Scott, 2nd place was awarded to student Becky Bower and her creation of Willy Wonka with model Lauren McAlistar with 3rd place awarded to Abigail Martin and her creation of Juicy Julie with model Julie-Anne Cairns.

Sharon added that she was very proud of the achievements of all the students and that they have all demonstrated a very high level of skill and creativity throughout the competition.
