Slight rise in Ballymena’s jobless figures

THE number of people registering as out of work in Ballymena saw a slight increase last month.

The claimant count in the area has gone up by 3.4 per cent from November to December, latest figures from the Department of Enterprise have revealed.

In December a total of 1,703 people claimed unemployment benefit in the borough, which was 3.4% more than the previous month.

Wards within the borough registering the most claimant counts for unemployment were Dunclug, Ballee and Ballykeel, with 130, 122, and 119 claimants respectively.

Areas which have the least claimant counts are Ballyloughan, Slemish and Academy, with 26, 31, and 38 claimants respectively.

In Northern Ireland as a whole there are 63,575 people claiming unemployment benefit, 5.5% of the working age population.
