Swann says Water Bill will boost rural community

RURAL communities “will greatly benefit” if the proposed new Water and Sewerage Services Bill becomes law, local UUP MLA Robin Swann says.

His comment came after supporting the Final Stage of the Water and Sewerage Services Bill during an Assembly debate.

The North Antrim MLA said: “It is an important debate because it reassures hard-working families that they will not have to worry about separate or additional water charging during this Assembly term.

“People across Northern Ireland who are worried about their heating bills, fuel bills, the rising cost of food and essentials and even about making their rent or mortgage payments can be reassured that they will not have to worry again about separate or additional water charging bills during this Assembly term.

“In the current difficult economic climate, working families have enough to worry about with Minister McCausland’s Welfare Reform Bill, if it is passed unamended, but they will not have to worry about water bills.

“I pay tribute to my party colleague and Executive Minister Danny Kennedy, for securing full Executive support for this measure in the Programme for Government, which was, ultimately, voted for all parties and supported by all parties.

“It is sometimes said that good things come in small packages, and I do not disagree with that. This Bill demonstrates that, in legislation, a short Bill can go a long way in improving the lot for households right across Northern Ireland. For that reason, we in the Ulster Unionist Party fully support the Bill,” said Assemblyman Swann.
