Swann urges toughter internet safeguards for pupils
NORTH Antrim UUP MLA Robin Swann has called for a joint Assembly/Police working group to draw up tougher internet safeguards for young people, especially students.
Assemblyman Swann issued his challenge after he voiced his “wholehearted support” for the recent Safer Internet Day.
Mr Swann said: “While the internet has become a fantastic educational resource, the speed of its development has caused many security problems, too.
“We know how important it is that young people are safe and supported while using the internet, and that parents are confident their children are protected from accessing harmful content.
“We have already taken great strides to make internet access more family friendly and we MLAs will continue to work with the industry, parents and young people to build an even safer internet in the future.
“I sincerely hope that one of the follow-ons from Safer Internet Day is that Stormont will act as a catalyst for encouraging individuals, families and companies to think about their role in ensuring the internet is a great and safe place for children.
“Safer Internet Day was a great opportunity for everyone to take a moment and reflect on how they are using technology, and this year to see if they are ‘Connecting with Respect’,” said Mr Swann.
He added: “I hope this will not simply be another day of pious words, but that the Stormont Executive and PSNI can set up a special task force aimed at both drawing up and implementing tougher internet safeguards for our young people.”
