Swann welcomes fall in parking tickets

A significant drop in the number of parking tickets issued to motorists in Ballymena has been described as “good news” for visiting shoppers by North Antrim UUP MLA Robin Swann.

According to the Assemblyman, 2,000 less tickets were issued in 2012 compared to the previous year.

His comments came last week after he received a written response from the Minister for Regional Development to his request for information on the number of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) issued in Ballymena in 2012 compared to 2011.

Mr Swann said: “In his reply, the Minister told me 6,855 PCNs were issued in 2011, compared with 4,693 in 2012 – a drop of more than 2,000.

“This drop has also affected the percentage of PCNs issued in Northern Ireland. In 2011, Ballymena represented 5.4% of PCNs, compared with 4.2% last year.

“This drop can only be good news for consumers coming to Ballymena to shop and I call on the Department of Regional Development to operate an even more lenient policy in issuing PCNs, or to see how more parking spaces can be made available in the town.

“The key to boosting the town – and the borough’s economy – is to make the region more shopper-friendly and consumer-accessible,” he said.
