SDLP MEA Councillor Declan O’Loan has criticised the U-turn made by Council on the requirement for bin lids to be closed.

According to Councillor O’Loan the local authority has responded too quickly to criticisms and come up with “an unworkable policy”

He stated: “They are now saying that bin collectors will put a warning sticker on a bin the first time it is presented with the lid not closed and will not collect it the next time it is presented in that way.

“It is not possible for bin workers to maintain an accurate record of stickers put on bins or to check bins against that record over many months. This only gives the basis for further complaints and rows,” said Cllr O’Loan.

“If any warning stickers are to be used, they should simply state that any bin presented with its lid up after, say the first of June, will not be collected,” he said.
