The new BBC documentary series ‘Ireland’s Great War’ will tell the story of local war hero Robert Quigg who was awarded the Victoria Cross during the First World War.
The story of Quigg VC will feature on February 8 at 6pm on BBC1.
Quigg, from Bushmills enlisted in the 12th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles which had hundreds of Ballymena and district men in its ranks at the beginning of the war.
On the first day of the Battle of the Somme, he went into no-man’s-land under intense machine-gun and shell fire to find his wounded commanding officer, Lieutenant Sir Harry Macnaghten.
He managed to save seven men but, sadly, he was unable to find Sir Harry. For his bravery he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Money is being collected to erect a bronze statue of Quigg in Bushmills.
