An event to raise awareness of newly introduced changes to the way people receive social care support has been held in Ballymena.

Attending the event in All Saints Parish Centre were around 80 people representing community and voluntary groups, carers and people who receive social care support.

Organised by the Northern Trust, it was held to inform and raise awareness of the new initiative by the Health and Social Care Board known as Self Directed Support (SDS) which will offer more control, flexibility and independence to people as they choose the support they want.

Traditionally Health and Social Care Trusts assessed an individual’s needs and decided what support they could arrange.

Self Directed Support means that once a Trust agrees that an individual needs social care support, the individual can work with their key worker to agree what support they need to suit their lifestyle.
