Police in Ballymena are investigating the suspected assault of a female police officer at North Road which led to the arrest of a 59-year-old man.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 29, as a man got out of his car when in traffic and approached a police vehicle.

The man is suspected of assaulting the officer when he closed the police car door, hitting her on the head with its frame. The officer was alone in the car at the time, but it is thought that other drivers in the area may have seen what happened.

The man was arrested and interviewed and has been released on bail pending further enquiries. The police officer was not seriously hurt and continued her duties the same day, a police spokesperson said.
