All Star GAA ‘first’ for St Louis ace Deirdre
Deirdre O'Kane, who has made history by becoming the first pupil from St Louis Grammar School, Ballymena, to receive a coveted All Star award for ladies' Gaelic football.
St Louis Grammar School Ballymena are celebrating the news that for the first time in the school’s history one of their students has received a Ladies Gaelic Football All Star Award.
Deirdre O’Kane, an Upper Sixth student at the schoo, won the award in the midfield position.
Deirdre has been playing gaelic for the school since Year 8. She plays her club football with St Ergnat’s Moneyglass and 2012 was her first year playing with the Ladies County Senior squad.
Deirdre was also awarded her Club Senior Player of the Year accolade a few weeks before she received news of her All Star award.
Having attended an initial trial in October with over 100 girls from around the province, Deirdre was selected to attend a second trial at MUSA, Cookstown in November when the panel was whittled down to 50 hopefuls.
In difficult conditions, Deidre excelled in midfield and fully justified her inclusion on the Ulster All Star team.
She is joined on the panel by three Antrim colleagues – Sarah Haughey (St Gall’s), Kirsty McGuiness (St Paul’s) and Meadbdh Laverty (St John’s). While she is a first All Star for her school, Deirdre is the second Ladies All Star in her Club – following Cathy Carey.
St Louis Ladies Gaelic football coach, Mr Adrian Quinn praised Deirdre on her success particularly in the last few months with her Club and All Star Awards.
He said “Deirdre is an extremely talented athlete and she is a worthy winner of an All Star award this year.
“She has been the backbone of every school team during her seven years in St Louis and the whole school community is delighted that Deirdre has been recognised as one of the top Ladies Gaelic players of her age group in Ulster at present.”
Deirdre will receive her award and jersey on 10th January at an All Star function in Ballygawley and then she will represent Ulster in the Interprovincial championship on 25th and 26th January.
