Ballymena Academy football team won the under-16 Mid Antrim Secondary Schools Competition, for the first time last week, beating Dunclug College in the final.

The match was a thriller with the best of the chances in the first half coming from Ballymena Academy. However Dunclug went into the break in the lead after scoring from a corner.

The Academy boys started the second half with greater intensity and their efforts were quickly rewarded with a well executed corner with Cameron McNeil scoring the equaliser.

The next phase of the game saw the Ballymena boys soak up a sustained period of pressure from Dunclug with Academy ‘Man of the Match’, goalkeeper Shane Gibson, pulling off a string of fine saves to keep the Galgorm Road boys in the game.

Then with 3 minutes left in injury time Matthew Shevlin scored the winning goal taking the final score to 2-1.

The striker was also named ‘Player of the Tournament’ having scored around 10 goals throughout the competition. Congratulations to the players and to their coach Jan Louw on this historic win for the school.
