Times Sport understands that discussions have already taken place between Mid and East Antrim Borough Council and Ballymena United officials regarding future development plans for the Warden Street venue.

The Showgrounds could benefit from some of the £36 million funding announced by Stormont’s Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure last year.

Ballymena United and the current Council’s predecessor, Ballymena Borough Council, have previously been successful in each attracting grant funding which has helped transform the Showgrounds into one of the top sports facilities in the country.

The topic has yet to come before the current Council for discussion but Times Sport understands the Showgrounds Masterplan already contains a proposal to convert the existing Main Arena grass pitch to a synthetic pitch.

A Mid and East Antrim Council spokesperson said: “A current DCAL consultation on Sub Regional Stadia for Soccer is underway and Council officials are working with all local clubs who may be eligible for potential future funding.

“One development proposal for the Ballymena Showgrounds may include an option to convert grass into the latest synthetic playing surface,” the spokesperson added.
