The trip included a tour of the North East clubs impressive facilities, coaching from the clubs coaching staff, a game against a local side and guests at the premiership fixture between Sunderland and Southampton.

Carniny are renowned for the many tours their various teams have attended having visited Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Holland, France, Scotland and England as well locally within Ireland in the last few years.

Upon arrival at the Campanile Hotel close to Sunderland the party were taken to the Stadium of Light and shown many parts of the stadium that are not accessible normally to the regular fan, while a visit to the club shop saw the boys stock up on ‘Black Cats’ gear.

The following day the boys were guests of local side, South Shields FC and put in a good display and were unlucky to be on the wrong end of a two goal defeat which arguably flattered the home team.

After lunch it was back to the Stadium of Light for Sunderland’s crucial fixture against European chasing Southampton who had Ballymena man Steven Davis in their ranks.

On the third and final day a by now tired bunch of lads took part in a training session from the Sunderland coaches at the Goals Soccer Centre and were congratulated by the premiership staff for their enthusiasm.

Before leaving club secretary Billy O’Flaherty paid special thanks to main Foundation of Light contact, Brett McGoldrick and his staff, also to all at Sunderland FC, the staff of Campanile Hotel, South Shields FC, Goals Galore Staff as well as the bus drivers who were most helpful throughout the visit.

Carniny hope to continue and build on this relationship and will without doubt take up future offers as discussed during the weekend.
