Fletcher has two shots to spare in May medal win at Galgorm

Trevor Fletcher playing off a 22 handicap won the May Medal at Galgorm Castle by two shots.

However his winning tally could have been much greater but he ran into bogey trouble over the last two holes to finish with two triple bogeys.

Colin Brown (23) was his nearest rival at the finish two shots behind. With three holes to play Fletcher was five and six shots ahead of Ivan Graham (22) and Brown respectively.

Graham came with a late run and with a par and bogey over the next two holes to a bogey and a triple bogey by Fletcher had closed to within two shots.

Fletcher held on up 18 to win from Brown who took the runner-up place with a bogey. I Graham (see Division 4) was another shot behind.

In Division 1 there was a close finish with two shots separating nine golfers.

At the turn Joel McNeilly (8) held a one shot advantage from Paul Houston (5), David Martin (10) and Jamie Sutherland (Scr). A further shot down came Trevor Fleming (8) who was one shot ahead of Steven Penney (2), Simon Kennedy (6) and Colin Kingham (3). Two further shots behind came David Murray (6).

With two to play both Fleming and Sutherland who had been making steady progress joined Houston in the lead one shot ahead of Kennedy, Martin, Kinghan and a rejuvenated Penney.

Houston with a bogey, par finish took first place. Murray, Penney, Kennedy, Fleming, Martin and McNeilly all finished together and with a better back nine Murray took second place with Penney third with a better back six.

Sutherland won the Gross and Kinghan the Seniors.

At halfway in Division 2 Paul Reid (13) had a three shot advantage over Keith Clements (11) followed by Paul Sittlington (11) and Chris Nicholl (15) at one and three shots respectively further behind.

Up the Grove and Clements had taken a one shot lead over Reid and a much improved Nicholl. He held onto that lead with a par, bogey finish to win from Reid (bogey, par) in second and Nicholl third.

After the front nine in Division 3 Gary Moon (18) was one shot ahead of Jonathan Keys (18) followed by Reginald McDowell (18) and Clifford Irvine (16) another two shots away. Alan Knox was two more shots behind and Eoghan Daly (18) was another shot down.

Knox and Irvine joined Moon (who had a distastrous three double bogeys) with two holes to play.

Moon finished bogey, par to win by one shot from Keys (par, bogey) with Knox (bogey, double bogey) in third place.

Michael Barr (22) led Division 4 at the start of the back nine by one shot from Ivan Graham (22) who was a shot ahead of John Caulfield (23).

By the 14th tee I Graham was two shots ahead of Barr who was followed by Caulfield and Doherty at one and two shots further behind.

Graham almost threw victory away with a triple bogey at the last but none of the others was able to take advantage of his slip and so he was able to hold on to win by one shot.

Barr who tried hard with a birdie and Caulfield (bogey) finished together and with a better back nine Caulfield finished second with Barr third.
