Southside celebrate ‘homecoming’ with convincing win

Southside responded to a midweek 2-2 draw with Newington by thrashing Immaculata 9-2 at Wakehurst in their first home match for three months on Saturday.

On 10 minutes a text book defence splitting pass from Stewart Nixon released David Calderwood and he made no mistake side footing home the first goal of the game.

The lead was increased on 25 minutes when Sam McNiece’ perfect cross gifted Stewart Nixon with the simplest of tasks as he side footed home number two but Immaculata were thrown a lifeline with a goal on the 32nd minute to bring them right back into the game.

Their joy was short lived when the two goal cushion was restored only a minute later when Leon Bonnes turned provider to find David Calderwood with an accurate pass and the prolific marksman made it 3-1 with a low shot.

The second half was only minutes old when a Jack Livingstone free kick was dispatched perfectly onto the head of David Calderwood who headed home his 32nd goal of the season.

Corey McDowell on the left received another perfect through ball from the impressive Stewart Nixon before beating two defenders and firing home number five.

On 55 minutes the Immaculata keeper could only parry out another Nixon effort which fell to Jordan Stewart who controlled and unleashed a great strike into the bottom corner of the net. 6-1. On the hour mark Sam McNiece rose highest to power home from a Stewart Nixon corner making it 7-1 before the visitors persistence earned them a second consolation goal.

Jack Livingstone got in on the goal scoring act on 76 minutes when he scored from close range before the hard working Sam McNiece got his reward with two minutes remaining when he ran onto a through ball, rounded the keeper before placing the ball into the empty net.
