The Sky Blues reached two semi-finals as well as the Irish Cup final last year but the manager is keen to continue that knockout form, while also improving upon their league position.

“We want to do better than last year,” said Ferguson.

“We want to push to try to get into the top six in the league and we want to compete and challenge once again in all the cup competitions.

“We want to be playing in big matches against big teams and the only way we can guarantee that is by finishing high in the league and getting as far as we can in cups.

“I’m happy with the squad. I would have liked to have got another striker but there aren’t too many about and I was really pleased to get Matthew Tipton in.”

United kick off their Danske Bank Premiership campaign this Saturday with a home game against Warrenpoint Town.

“We have an opportunity to get off to a positive start but only if we show the right attitude.

“We made a disastrous start on the first day against Glenavon last season so we want to do better this time.”

United will be without Gary Thompson and Tony Kane, both of whom start three match suspension following their red cards in the Irish Cup final defeat by Glenavon.
