A BALLYMENA martial arts coach has paid tribute to world-famous boxing trainer Emmanuel Stewart, who died recently.

Dan Redmond met Stewart a number of years ago when he came to England, along with Thomas ‘the Hitman’ Hearns, one of several world champions he worked with.

“It was both an enjoyable and education evening,” recalls Dan.

“He was a friendly, polite man with a ready smile.

“He had a deep knowledge of boxing and I enjoyed talking to him and hearing his opinion of the current and past champions.

“He complimented all the champions of the present time but it was his knowledge about and selection of past champions that surprised and interested me so much.

“It was a wonderful evening spent in the company of a legend and I was sad to learn of Emmanuel’s death,” added Dan.
