Two cups up for grabs at Raceview

Members under the age of 55 had the Currie Cup to play for, while the over-55s had the seniors’ Thompson Cup to particpate in - both events were sponsored by Curtis Peugeot.

The Currie Cup resulted in a victory for David Montgomery (21) with a total of 41 points, of which 22 came from the second nine holes.

The first nine was made up of six bgeys, pars at the third and sixth, while a triple bogey at the par three fourth produced no gain.

The second nine resulted in five bogeys, pars on the 15th, 16th and 17th while a double bogey on the 12th was worth a single point, which was enough to push Derek Smyth into second place.

Derek, playing off 14, produced equal nines of 20 points and a non-score on the par three seventh proved costly but against that, a birdie on the 14th provided four points alone.

John Brown (9) took third nett prize with 39 points and his front nine of seven pars plus two bogeys was equal to 20 points.

A birdie on the last hole saw him finish a point ahead of Thomas SUrgenor (12).

Twenty points on the second nine saw Surgenor edge out Sean McGarry (4) after he managed 18 points over the same stretch.

The final nett prize was won by another four-handicapper, Steven Smyth, who returned 37 points.

The best gross return came from Gary Black (2) who played the course in one over par.

THOMPSON CUP

As well as finishing second in the Currie Cup, Derek Smyth (14) made it a double when he won the Thompson Cup.

Second place was taken by Trevor Hamill who, playing off a handicap of 11, returned a total of 38 points, 21 of which came from a second nine which included seven pars.

Paul Rodgers (12) claimed the third prize with a total of 37 points of which 20 came from the front nine of five pars and four bogeys.

His back nine was going well until he reached the eighteenth tee where he recorded a ‘ding’ for no points to his total.
